network, sys admin, desktop or IT supervisor?

Question by benny_blanco07: network, sys admin, desktop or IT supervisor?
so i’ve been doing level II IT support for almost 12 yrs now. I am still in my early 30′s and have had trouble finding someone to let me in and play with the big IT projects (Cisco, SANs, VMs, etc.) I’ve gone back to school, took a full year of official Cisco academy and got pretty good at it, I’ve been also taking server 2008 courses and decided to leave my job of 6 yrs to push myself for something better.I took a job as an IT generalist aka ‘helpdesk’ which wasn’t that bad technically (doing helpdesk, desktop, pbx, mobile devices, etc) but was too tied down to answering phones and doing ‘clerical’l stuff such as updating the company phone list. Thus I began looking again for something where I could apply my recent college education and sys/network skills, the closest I got of getting my break was a month ago when I was admitted as a noc tech into the main network operations center of the largest satellite tv provider.

I thought that had to be my dream job, my way into the big stuff but then came to find out that I’d been getting paid almost 30/hr just to log tickets and have outsourced cisco employees do the troubleshooting, thanks but no thanks I left that same day, I’ve been feeling i’m running out of time to start from the bottom. so then a job came up where I will be a desktop tech supervisor of a large organization’s facility with approx 100 departments, 2000 computers/users and supervising a crew of five.

This org is so large that they pretty much they have an entire IT team for everything; even a password reset team. So, this is paying just a little more, I may not practice all my tech skills and possibly have desktop tech privileges locked down limited to exact desktop duties.

so i’m just wondering if this supervisor gig is better than staying as a generalist, doing a little bit of everything within a level 1 & 2 but still no participation in the good stuff.

my friends think this supervisor job would probably wonders on my resume. I was picked over other internal and external candidates and so far my new boss likes me a lot but my employees not so much as they think I’m micromanaging them so they are being insubordinate, not attending my meetings and challenging me. I still havent officially resigned from the other job which pays only like 1.50/hr less but I want to look things long term…

Question by tiny_person_89: How can I tell if my computer is connected to a “remote desk” . . . [Connected to a Network]?
I bought a used computer off of someone and they said that they’ll keep the computer on their remote desk to see if it keeps working well for me . . . . Is the normal or he a hacker? Help

Answer by yap_jp
Nobody does it without the user’s concerns and it’s very dangerous especially if you don’t know the person well. If he can remotely connect to your computer, theoretically he also can do anything to your computer. So it’s up to you to decide whether you can trust the person or not
